“The most important thing is… “
this is a point in that sentence where plenty of times one thing becomes thingS and IS becomes ARE. When a word Priority was invented in 15th century it deviated from Old French ”priorite” or Medieval Latin “prioritatem”, meaning earlier than. It took us 500 years to change the meaning of being earlier, or being first and more important that others to having multiple firsts. Rather illogical, yet so popular in the XXI century to have Priorities.
The first business schools were created also around that time in the end of 1800, beginning 1900. Many may say that correlation is not causation. In this case well this might be the reason. 😉
When planning work, or creating OKRs that’s the essence of work, asking ourselves OK what is that one thing on top. How can we as an Organization, Group, Team, Unit know where to focus if there is 7 directions. It’s hard to say no to things, I know that, yet that’s the essence of great planning - Letting go the things that are not a “priorite”. 🥇
Ending a cycle with 7 Objective and 5-10 Key Results is like saying to your team - You know what, just do whatever. Why bother with this if you are not able to focus? If everything is a priority, nothing truly is. Choose what matters most and give it your full attention.
